Wow, where has the time gone. Here I am, on the brink of Summer Institute and starting Teach First proper. Needless to say, the past few weeks have been full of excitement and anxiety.
This also means that I am now into my final week as a T.A. It has certainly been a great insight into the weird and wonderful world of the teaching profession and I now can’t imagine having a job that isn’t like a ride on a particularly stomach churning roller-coster. If you are undecided about teaching I’d definitely recommend you give it a go.
I haven’t told the children yet that I’ll be leaving on Friday and if I’m honest I am dreading it! I can’t imagine what it will be like to say goodbye to Charlie, Amira, Katy, Libby and all the other children who I’ve spent most of my waking day with for over sixth months. This is going to be an important lesson for me: letting go. It’s something that I’ll be doing once a year until I retire. I’m preparing for the worst and bringing some tissues!
I’ve had some news this week though that has softened the blow a little. I am going to be teaching Year 1. I’ve been thinking about all the amazing stories I get to share with my class ever since. Not to mention binging on Pinterest pin-boards of classroom resources (if you haven’t finished your PPW stay well away!)
So all in all it’s started out as a good last week. I just can’t believe how quickly it’s going.
I went to a Teach First London event a couple of weeks ago and I realised that it’s nearly a year exactly since I sent off my application. Since then a lot has changed. The biggest difference is that I now live in London. The smallest is that I am still ridiculously excited about becoming a Teacher. A lot of people over the past year have tried to derail me on this. Some say that the profession has changed, others that the children are awful, most frequently I am linked to articles about Michael Gove. None of this has put me off though, as my dad always says: ‘I’d rather life was anything but boring’. If you feel like that too, then teaching, and Teach First, is absolutely for you.
